Having been raised by ardent atheists who have very liberal views I grew up reading all sorts of fantasy fiction I really struggle to understand the whole not reading Potter thing. Dad read me Lord of the Rings when I was 6 so that pretty much set the standard for my reading habits.
Have you read The Weirdstone of Brisingamen by Alan Garner? It's very British, and a little old fashioned, but an excellent children book. Spooky as hell when you visit the place where it's set. Mind you that could just have been dad trying to freak us out :-)
