They do go off on leave, talk and then are happy. At least they do in my head too.
You're right to wonder about how everyone will treat Rodney. I think John is so happy when they get back, so obviously in love, that no one says anything bad about Rodney in front of him. Rodney is contrite enough and so obviously spoiling John that they realise that maybe it was all a huge mistake on his part.
